Traditional Greek Salad
Ingredients list for 2 persons

1 Onion

1 Green pepper

¾ Salad cucumber

4 Tomatoes

1 handful of Kalamata olives

200g feta cheese (1 block)

2 tsp dried oregano

1 pinch of salt

4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

2 tbsp red wine vinegar

Traditional Greek Salad

Unbeatable and uncomplicated salad.

Recipe:

Peel and half the onion and then slice into half rings.
Wash and pat dry the tomatoes and green pepper. Partially peel the cucumber.

Cut the tomatoes into chunks. Cut the cucumber lengthwise, then into thick halves. Thinly slice the green pepper into rings and remove any seeds.

To assemble the salad, place the tomatoes, onions, cucumbers and green peppers on a large plate. Either mix them or place them in that way that they are all mixed and evenly distributed.

Scatter the Kalamata olives over the salad. Season with a pinch of salt and 1 tsp dried oregano.
Drizzle with the extra virgin olive oil and the red wine vinegar. Place a block of feta cheese on top of the salad.

Drizzle the feta with some extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle the remaining dried oregano on the feta cheese.

Serve immediately.

Chefs Tip

Traditionally the feta is added as a block, but if you like you can cut it in half or quarters and then place on top of the salad. Never use fresh oregano and for this salad try to get the best and freshest ingredients.

Menu suggestion

Just on its own is great. In that case, serve with fresh homemade sourdough bread e.g. with black olives, rosemary and roasted garlic (see the loafy goodness section).

You could also serve it alongside chicken, lamb or burgers or some vegetarian oven dishes.

Wine suggestion

As it is a traditional Greek dish, why not serve a bottle of Retsina with it? If you are not so fond of Retsina, try a really nice and dry rose.

Music suggestion

Summer or greek taverna music.
